EU Startups strategy

A bold move toward innovation and growth

The European Union is taking a fresh approach to innovation and business growth with its newly unveiled competitiveness compass, a strategy designed to close the innovation gap, simplify regulations and position Europe as a global leader in tech and entrepreneurship.

For years, startups and industry leaders have voiced concerns that the EU’s regulatory-heavy approach has stifled innovation. Now, the bloc is shifting gears. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the urgency of the moment, stating, “Europe has everything it needs to succeed in the race to the top. But, at the same time, we must fix our weaknesses to regain competitiveness.”

The competitiveness compass aligns with key recommendations from former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who recently called for increased investment and regulatory streamlining. With this strategy, the EU is making a clear commitment to turning policy into action.

The plan focuses on three critical areas:
Closing the innovation gap – Boosting investment in tech and streamlining bureaucracy to help startups thrive.
Decarbonising without sacrificing competitiveness – Supporting green innovation while maintaining industrial strength.
Reducing external dependencies – Strengthening Europe’s technological and economic autonomy.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect? A dedicated startup strategy aimed at making it easier for businesses to scale, including long-overdue regulatory simplifications across the continent. With a focus on AI, deep tech and industrial innovation, the EU aims to remove roadblocks and empower the next wave of European unicorns.

The world isn’t waiting—let’s see if the EU can turn this momentum into real progress.
